What excess weight means?

Excess weight refers to carrying more body weight than is considered healthy for an individual’s height, age, and gender. It is often associated with having a higher body mass index (BMI), which is a measure of body fat based on height and weight.

Excess weight can result from a variety of factors, including overeating, a sedentary lifestyle, hormonal imbalances, genetic predisposition, certain medical conditions, and medication side effects. When individuals consume more calories than their bodies need for energy expenditure, the excess calories are stored as fat, leading to weight gain.

Having excess weight can have negative impacts on physical health, increasing the risk of various chronic conditions such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer, hypertension (high blood pressure), and joint problems. It can also affect mental well-being, self-esteem, and overall quality of life.

Addressing excess weight often involves adopting a balanced and nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, managing stress, and making lifestyle changes that promote a sustainable and healthy weight. Consulting with healthcare professionals, such as doctors and registered dietitians, can provide personalized guidance and support for weight management.

What can cause excess weight?

There are several factors that can contribute to excess weight or obesity. These include:

  1. Overeating: Consuming more calories than the body needs for energy can lead to weight gain. Factors such as larger portion sizes, high-calorie processed foods, and frequent snacking can contribute to overeating.
  2. Sedentary Lifestyle: Lack of physical activity and a sedentary lifestyle can result in weight gain. Spending long hours sitting or engaging in minimal physical movement reduces calorie expenditure and can lead to weight accumulation.
  3. Genetics: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to gain weight more easily than others. Genetic factors can influence metabolism, fat storage, and appetite regulation, which can contribute to excess weight.
  4. Environmental Factors: The environment in which a person lives plays a role in weight gain. Access to unhealthy food options, such as high-calorie processed foods and sugary beverages, can promote overeating. Additionally, environments that discourage physical activity, such as lack of safe recreational spaces or limited access to exercise facilities, can contribute to weight gain.
  5. Medical Conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and Cushing’s syndrome, can contribute to weight gain or make weight loss more challenging.
  6. Medications: Some medications, such as certain antidepressants, antipsychotics, corticosteroids, and antiepileptic drugs, may have side effects that promote weight gain or increase appetite.
  7. Emotional Factors: Emotional factors like stress, anxiety, and depression can contribute to overeating as a coping mechanism, leading to weight gain.

It’s important to note that excess weight is often influenced by a combination of these factors, and individual circumstances can vary. Consulting with healthcare professionals, such as doctors and registered dietitians, can help identify the specific causes of excess weight and develop personalized strategies for weight management.

How much weight is excess?

Determining how much weight is considered excess depends on various factors, including an individual’s height, age, gender, and body composition. One commonly used measure to assess weight status is the Body Mass Index (BMI). BMI is calculated by dividing a person’s weight in kilograms by the square of their height in meters.

BMI categories are often used as a general guideline to classify weight status:

  1. Underweight: BMI less than 18.5
  2. Normal weight: BMI between 18.5 and 24.9
  3. Overweight: BMI between 25 and 29.9
  4. Obesity (Class I): BMI between 30 and 34.9
  5. Obesity (Class II): BMI between 35 and 39.9
  6. Obesity (Class III or severe obesity): BMI 40 or higher

It’s important to note that while BMI can provide a rough estimation of weight status, it does not consider factors such as muscle mass, body composition, and distribution of fat. Therefore, it may not be the most accurate indicator for everyone.

Healthcare professionals often take a comprehensive approach when assessing excess weight, considering factors such as waist circumference, body fat percentage, and individual health risks. Consulting with a healthcare professional, such as a doctor or registered dietitian, can provide a more personalized evaluation of excess weight and its potential health implications for an individual.

What happens when you carry excess weight?

The incident even reached the court. On December 20, judge Renata Martins de Carvalho ruled in favor of the Brazilian model. The judge also ordered Qatar Airways to pay for the Brazilian model’s counselling, due to the impact on Juliana’s mental health in the incident.

The court said Juliana would incur a total cost of Rs 3,07,018, including a minimum of Rs 6,389 for each “weekly therapy session” for a year. However, Qatar Airways has also cleared the incident.According to the airline concerned, if a passenger is unable to wear a seatbelt and the safety of other passengers is in question for that passenger, he/she may be required to purchase an additional seat.

Qatar Airways even claimed that Juliana’s behavior was not polite.(Excess weight)
